County Fair invites unemployed youth to apply for the Millwright Apprenticeship Program 2024/2025.

Location:  Cape Town | Durbanville

About the Opportunity

At County Fair, we understand that the foundation of any successful engineering career is built on a solid combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. That’s why our Millwright Apprenticeship is designed to provide you with both. Over the course of the program, you’ll be immersed in a learning environment that balances classroom instruction with on-the-job training. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have acquired the skills, experience, and qualifications needed to become a certified Millwright, ready to tackle the challenges of the industry.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking individuals who are not just interested in engineering, but who have a genuine passion for the discipline. The ideal candidates will have a natural aptitude for understanding complex mechanical and electrical systems, and they will be eager to apply this knowledge in real-world settings. Here’s what you’ll need to succeed in this role:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Educational Background: You must have completed Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science as subjects. These are essential for understanding the technical concepts you’ll encounter during your apprenticeship.
  • Technical Qualifications: A National Technical Certificate (N4) is the minimum requirement to participate in the trade program. This qualification ensures that you have a foundational understanding of the engineering principles you’ll be applying on the job. A higher qualification, such as N5 or N6 in the relevant engineering discipline, will be advantageous and may give you a head start in the program.

Skills and Competencies:

Success in this apprenticeship requires more than just meeting the educational qualifications. We’re looking for candidates who possess the following key skills and competencies:

  • Aptitude for Engineering: You should have a natural talent for understanding how things work. Whether it’s mechanical systems, electrical circuits, or complex machinery, you should be curious and excited to learn more.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is critical in the engineering field. You must be able to focus on the details, ensuring that every task is completed accurately and to the highest standard. This skill is especially important when dealing with intricate components and systems that require careful assembly or maintenance.
  • Conceptual Skills: The ability to think abstractly and understand complex concepts is essential. You’ll need to visualize how different parts of a system work together and anticipate potential issues before they arise.
  • Willingness to Learn: This apprenticeship is a learning journey, and we’re looking for individuals who are eager to grow. You must be willing to attend training sessions at the relevant college and be open to feedback and guidance from experienced professionals.

Your Journey as an Apprentice Millwright

As a Millwright Apprentice at County Fair, you’ll be part of a structured program that combines academic learning with practical, hands-on experience. Here’s a glimpse of what your apprenticeship journey will look like:

  1. Classroom Instruction: You’ll attend regular classes at a designated technical college where you’ll study the theoretical aspects of Millwrighting. This will include subjects like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, pneumatics, and hydraulics. The knowledge you gain in the classroom will be directly applicable to the work you do on-site.
  2. On-the-Job Training: Alongside your studies, you’ll work under the supervision of experienced Millwrights who will mentor you throughout your apprenticeship. You’ll get hands-on experience with a variety of tasks, from installing and maintaining machinery to troubleshooting mechanical issues. This practical training is invaluable and will help you develop the skills you need to excel in your future career.
  3. Skill Development: Throughout the program, you’ll be challenged to develop your problem-solving abilities, improve your technical skills, and refine your attention to detail. You’ll learn how to work with different tools and equipment, understand safety protocols, and gain a deep understanding of the machinery and systems you’ll be working with.
  4. Assessment and Qualification: Your progress will be regularly assessed to ensure you’re meeting the necessary standards. At the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll take a final evaluation to demonstrate your competency as a Millwright. Successful completion of the program will earn you a recognized qualification as an Artisan, opening doors to numerous career opportunities in the engineering field.
