What You’ll Do
As a Junior Safety Officer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the safety of our teams, contractors, and the environment. You’ll be the go-to person for creating a safe and healthy workplace, minimizing our environmental footprint, and protecting Alstom’s assets. Based at our Richards Bay Depot, you’ll work closely with the Site EHS Manager and other stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS).
Responsibility:
- Support EHS Goals
- Work with internal teams to achieve safety and environmental objectives.
- Help conduct risk assessments and implement measures to control risks.
- Assist in preparing and maintaining emergency response plans.
- Develop and Maintain EHS Systems
- Support the creation and implementation of local EHS procedures and tools.
- Ensure compliance with Alstom’s standards and international certifications like ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
- Promote the use of Alstom’s EHS tools, such as the Alstom Zero Deviation Plan (AZDP).
- Ensure Compliance
- Perform regular checks to ensure compliance with EHS laws and regulations.
- Conduct site inspections, audits, and toolbox meetings to keep everyone safe.
- probe incidents, dissect root causes, and apply corrective conduct.
- Promote a Culture of Safety
- Deliver EHS training and inductions to employees and contractors.
- Recognize and reward safe practices while addressing any violations.
- Foster a workplace where safety and environmental responsibility are top priorities.
- Reporting and Measurement
- Capture and report EHS data, including accidents and near-misses.
- Prepare monthly EHS reports and maintain accurate records.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) like Injury Frequency Rate (IFR) and environmental metrics.
What You’ll Bring
To thrive in this role, you’ll need:
- A university degree in Engineering or a technical qualification.
- A Health & Safety qualification recognized by local authorities (minimum 3 years).
- At least 3 years of experience in Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS).
- Experience in manufacturing sites or regional centers is a big plus.
- A solid understanding of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Familiarity with local EHS legal requirements, including South African regulations for contractor management.
