Key Responsibilities of the Fitter Role
As a Fitter – Rope Shovel Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, maintenance, and repair of earth-moving equipment. Your role will encompass several critical areas:
1. General Machine Inspection
- Conduct routine health checks and inspections on new and used rope shovel machinery in stock.
- Perform thorough visual inspections in accordance with Komatsu technical manuals and standards.
- Identify any technical issues, faults, or abnormalities and communicate these findings effectively to your line manager or leadership team.
- Test and adjust faulty components to ensure optimal machine performance.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and submit comprehensive reports to support operational decision-making.
- Provide feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workshop efficiency.
2. Troubleshooting & Diagnostics
- Plan and execute troubleshooting processes for machinery, anticipating required tools and manuals.
- Perform root cause analysis on complex equipment faults, ensuring accurate identification of issues.
- Coordinate with leadership to manage repair orders and procure necessary parts.
- Compare actual machine measurements with technical specifications to ensure compliance.
- Submit detailed fault-finding reports and recommend effective repair solutions.
- Continuously improve troubleshooting processes by sharing insights and best practices with the team.
3. Machine Repairs
- Plan repair schedules, allocate resources, and coordinate workshop activities for effective equipment maintenance.
- Execute repairs according to Komatsu technical literature, ensuring safety and quality standards.
- Test repaired components to verify functionality and compliance with specifications.
- Return unused parts to stock following approved procedures.
- Monitor and report the progress of repairs, highlighting any operational challenges to leadership.
- Provide feedback on repair methods to improve future maintenance operations.
4. Machine Services
- Develop service plans for equipment, considering workshop resources, spare parts, and timelines.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on rope shovels and other machinery.
- Obtain technical advice on complex service operations to ensure precision and efficiency.
- Document service results, including any abnormalities or damage, and submit reports to management.
- Contribute suggestions for continuous service improvement and operational efficiency.
5. Machine & Component Disassembly & Assembly
- Plan and execute disassembly and assembly processes for machinery components, whether new or for rebuild projects.
- Ensure all technical steps are followed accurately, with attention to safety and quality.
- Return unused consumables to stock according to standard procedures.
- Report all findings, challenges, and improvement suggestions to leadership to enhance workshop performance.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Fitter Trade Certificate (essential).
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in maintaining, servicing, and repairing Rope Shovel earth-moving equipment.
- Practical exposure to heavy-duty earth-moving machinery.
- Strong troubleshooting and mechanical diagnostic skills.
- Familiarity with standard workshop tools and technical manuals.
- Computer literacy for reporting, diagnostics, and equipment tracking.
- Comprehensive understanding of maintenance philosophy and preventive measures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with team members and leadership.
- A valid driver’s license.
