Johannesburg Water is seeking 10 skilled Artisan Bricklayers to join our team on a 12-month contract. This role offers the opportunity to work on essential water and sewer infrastructure projects while developing your career with a leading municipal entity.

Role Purpose and Impact
As an Artisan Bricklayer, you will play a vital role in maintaining and upgrading Johannesburg’s critical water and sanitation systems. Your work will involve constructing and repairing essential structures including chambers, culverts, valve boxes, paving, kerbs, and concrete foundations. This position goes beyond typical construction work – you’ll be helping to build and maintain the infrastructure that keeps Johannesburg functioning.
Key Responsibilities
Construction and Maintenance Work
- Build and repair walls, steps, pillars, and culverts for water and sewer systems
- Perform tiling, plastering, and concrete mixing according to engineering specifications
- Reinstate road kerbs, paving, and driveways to municipal standards
- Assist in excavation, shoring, and backfilling operations with strict safety compliance
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to OHASA, SANS, and Johannesburg Water safety regulations
- Conduct thorough risk assessments before working in excavations or confined spaces
- Properly utilize all protective equipment and immediately report any hazards
Administration and Reporting
- Accurately complete daily job cards, check sheets, and overtime reports
- Maintain vehicle inspection logs and submit fuel slips according to policy
- Ensure clear communication with supervisors, colleagues, and the public
Team Leadership and Development
- Assist in training and supervising junior team members
- Help identify skills development opportunities within the team
- Maintain professional standards aligned with company values
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Grade 10 or N1 (NQF Level 2) qualification
- Valid Bricklaying Trade Test Certificate or NQF Level 4 Learnership
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in bricklaying, paving, and concrete work
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plans
- Basic supervisory experience (advantageous)
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s License with PrDP (essential for site travel)
