About the Role
As a truck driver with York Timbers, you’ll play a crucial role in our logistics team, ensuring that our products are delivered safely and on time to various locations. You’ll be more than just a driver; you’ll be the face of our company on the road, interacting with clients and maintaining the high standards that York Timbers is known for.
Key Responsibilities
- Route Planning: You’ll be responsible for planning the shortest and most efficient routes for deliveries. This involves taking into consideration road conditions, traffic patterns, and delivery deadlines to ensure timely arrivals.
- Driving and Delivering: You’ll drive the company truck to various destinations, following the instructions provided for each delivery. Loading and unloading goods safely and efficiently will be a key part of your role, ensuring that products arrive in perfect condition.
- Safety First: Safety is our top priority at York Timbers. You’ll need to apply your knowledge of commercial driving regulations at all times, ensuring that both you and the goods you transport are safe.
- Customer Interaction: Maintaining a positive attitude with customers is essential. You’ll often be the only in-person representative of York Timbers that our customers interact with, so it’s important to leave a lasting, positive impression.
- Documentation: You’ll be responsible for obtaining correct documentation and proof of delivery for each job. This includes handling paperwork efficiently and ensuring that all records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Coordination: Regular communication with dispatch clerks and fleet controllers will be a part of your routine. You’ll report any incidents or delays immediately to ensure smooth operations.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Ensuring that the truck is parked in safe areas, both on-site and off, is crucial. You’ll also need to make sure that the vehicle is in good working condition, performing basic maintenance checks as required.
- Fuel Management: You’ll manage the company fuel card responsibly, ensuring that fuel purchases are documented correctly and that fuel is used efficiently.
- Compliance: Keeping up with commercial driving regulations and ensuring that your driving license and permits are valid at all times is critical. You’ll also need to complete any required safety or compliance training as part of your ongoing development.
- Incident Reporting: If there are any issues during your deliveries—whether that’s a delay, an accident, or a vehicle malfunction—you’ll need to report them immediately and follow the appropriate procedures.
- Continuous Improvement: At York Timbers, we believe in always striving for better. We encourage our drivers to contribute ideas for improving delivery processes, enhancing customer service, and ensuring safety on the roads.
What We’re Looking For
- Educational Background: A Grade 12 certificate or equivalent is essential.
- Driving Experience: You should have 2-3 years of driving experience, with a valid Code 14(EC) driving license and a public driver’s permit.
- Additional Skills: A forklift license is a bonus, but not mandatory. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are important, as you’ll be interacting with customers and colleagues regularly. Problem-solving skills are also essential, as you’ll need to navigate unexpected challenges on the road.
- Physical Stamina: This job can be physically demanding. You’ll need to be comfortable working shifts, including long hours and overtime when necessary. The ability to handle strenuous tasks in hot, dusty, and noisy conditions is a must.
- Safety-Conscious: A commitment to safety is non-negotiable. You’ll need to follow all safety regulations and company policies to ensure your well-being and that of others.
