Position Overview

As an SHE Officer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Steelpoort and Middelburg branches, including the field services, ensuring compliance with both national and local legislation. You will be responsible for maintaining the site’s risk assessments and overseeing adherence to the Weir Group’s Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) requirements, as well as its behavioral safety standards. This includes managing various SHE documentation systems, addressing safety gaps, and implementing safety protocols across the region. In essence, you’ll be a key player in driving our goal of creating a safer and more sustainable work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Compliance Management: Assist with ensuring compliance with all relevant local and national legislation across the countries where we operate.
  2. SHE Management System Administration: Oversee the management, administration, and control of SHE documentation, ensuring it aligns with ISO and Weir Group standards.
  3. Environmental Management: Administer and maintain environmental management processes, including waste management, permits, and licenses. You will also oversee the system that tracks compliance and regulatory updates related to environmental issues.
  4. Training and Development: Support the development and oversight of both internal and external training programs. This includes managing safety inductions, fire drills, and accident prevention programs for both employees and contractors.
  5. Behavioral Safety: Implement and maintain the Weir ZERO Harm Behavioral Framework, which is designed to foster a safety-first culture throughout the company. This means taking a proactive approach to identifying hazards and mitigating risks before they result in harm.
  6. Audit and Monitoring: Monitor the site’s risk assessments and audit action lists, ensuring that any gaps identified in BBS (Behavior Based Safety) or group audits are addressed in a timely manner. You’ll also be responsible for overseeing the Shield system, ensuring that it’s up-to-date and functioning effectively.
  7. Safety Leadership: Demonstrate a 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors and lead by example in maintaining a world-class safety culture across all sites.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A Higher National Diploma (preferably in the field of Safety, Health, and Environmental management) or an equivalent qualification.
  • A NEBOSH certification is advantageous, although not mandatory.
  • A relevant driver’s license.
  • At least 5 years of experience working in SHE, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proven experience in implementing and maintaining ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) systems.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation, with the ability to apply it effectively in day-to-day operations.
