Closing Date: 10 September 2024

Adeo is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our dynamic team at Greenstone. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining a safe workplace that adheres to all legal standards. This position not only ensures compliance but also fosters a culture of safety across the entire organization. If you are passionate about creating secure work environments and have a proactive approach to risk management, this role is for you!

Purpose of the Role

The primary objective of the Health & Safety Officer is to develop, implement, and sustain health and safety policies that protect employees, subcontractors, and visitors. You will be instrumental in establishing a workplace that not only complies with health and safety regulations but also actively promotes the well-being of everyone on-site. This includes working closely with health professionals, conducting safety training, and continuously reviewing safety procedures to reduce risks and prevent accidents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and Maintain Health & Safety Policies: Your role will involve crafting and updating comprehensive health and safety policies that align with current legal standards. These policies will guide all safety operations across the company and ensure consistent compliance.
  • Medical Fitness for Employees: Liaise with healthcare professionals to guarantee that employees in key positions are medically fit to perform their duties safely. This is crucial in high-risk roles where medical fitness can significantly impact safety.
  • Risk Assessments and Safety Reviews: Regularly conduct and update risk assessments, ensuring that all operations are carried out safely. You will also need to update safe operating procedures and safety statements to reflect any changes in regulations or operational risks.
  • Safety Induction Training: Provide thorough safety induction training to all staff, including subcontractors. This includes documenting training sessions to ensure compliance and providing a clear record of all employees’ understanding of health and safety protocols.
  • Accident Investigation and Reporting: Investigate any accidents or incidents on-site, documenting them promptly and accurately. Your investigations will help identify root causes, and you’ll work to implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Quarterly Health & Safety Drills: Conduct regular safety drills to ensure that all employees are familiar with emergency procedures. These drills help to reinforce health and safety knowledge and ensure employees are well-prepared for any incidents.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all accidents are reported to the appropriate regulatory bodies, such as the Department of Labour. Additionally, monitor the company’s internal recording of any operational accidents or incidents to ensure all details are logged properly.
  • Statutory Training and Certification: Ensure all staff are up-to-date with required statutory training and certifications. It’s your responsibility to monitor the validity of certifications and ensure renewals occur on time.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure that staff always have access to the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Proper PPE reduces risks significantly, and it is vital that employees are supplied with and use the correct equipment for their tasks.
  • Subcontractor Safety Compliance: Review and evaluate the safety statements provided by subcontractors to ensure their operations comply with the company’s health and safety policies. You’ll also oversee subcontractor compliance during their work on-site.
  • Health & Safety Meetings: Attend regular health and safety meetings to discuss any ongoing concerns, incidents, or policy updates. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that meeting minutes are documented accurately and that follow-up actions are tracked.
  • Monthly Safety Reports: Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly reports detailing the company’s health and safety performance. These reports are submitted to Adeo’s structures and are critical for maintaining transparency and accountability in safety practices.

Key Skills and Qualifications

To excel in this role, you will need a combination of technical expertise and interpersonal skills. Here’s what we are looking for:

  • Educational Background: A completed three-year tertiary qualification in Health & Safety or a related field is required. This ensures that you have a solid foundation in the legal and operational aspects of health and safety.
  • Experience: You should have 3-5 years of proven experience working in a fast-paced environment, with a demonstrated ability to manage health and safety functions effectively. Experience in a retail environment is advantageous but not required.
  • Certification: Holding a SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Certificate) is essential for this role. This certification ensures that you are equipped with the necessary skills to manage safety risks, conduct audits, and maintain a compliant workplace.
  • Attention to Detail: The ability to focus on small details is critical, as even minor oversights can lead to significant safety risks.
  • Time Management: Strong time management skills are necessary to juggle multiple responsibilities, from training and documentation to accident investigations and compliance checks.
  • Communication Skills: You must be able to communicate effectively at all levels within the company. Whether discussing safety measures with senior management or explaining procedures to front-line staff, clear communication is essential.
  • Ability to Work Under Pressure: The ability to stay calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure situations is key. Health and safety incidents often require quick thinking and decisive action.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: You must be able to anticipate and prevent potential accidents or incidents by identifying risks early and implementing preventative measures.
  • Technical Competence: Full computer literacy is essential for managing records, creating reports, and conducting research on health and safety regulations.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is required, as you may need to travel between different sites to ensure safety standards are met consistently.
