What Does the Close Protection Officer Role Involve?
As a Close Protection Officer (CPO) at the University of Johannesburg, your core mission is to safeguard individuals who may face elevated risks, referred to as the “Principals”. Your responsibilities will go far beyond basic guarding. You will be involved in route planning, threat assessments, tactical response, surveillance, and emergency management. - Personally escort designated individuals (Principal/s) on and off campus, following detailed protection strategies.
- Serve as driver and bodyguard during transit.
- Prepare comprehensive threat and risk assessments for events or high-risk scenarios.
- Plan safe and efficient travel routes, applying advanced driving techniques where necessary.
- Conduct tactical surveillance and implement counter-surveillance methods.
- Liaise with protocol officers and internal security staff for coordinated protection planning.
3. Emergency Response & Health and Safety Compliance
- Respond swiftly to high-risk emergencies such as fires, threats, or unusual behavior.
- Provide first aid as needed within your area of responsibility.
4. Physical Fitness and Readiness

- Transport goods, equipment, and assist in technical surveillance activities.

Minimum Requirements to Apply
To qualify for this Close Protection Officer role, candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- Matric (NQF Level 4)
- Relevant Qualification (e.g., diploma or professional certification at NQF Level 6) plus 3–5 years of related experience, or
- Grade 12 with 8–10 years of direct experience in the security or protection field
- PSIRA Grade A certification
- Valid driver’s license
- Firearm competency for business purposes (essential for protective duties)
