Role Overview

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure our site adheres to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. You will be responsible for mitigating risks, minimizing litigation exposure, and safeguarding the reputation of the company by aligning operational practices with health, safety, and environmental (SHE) standards. This includes developing and implementing safety policies, procedures, and programs, with a proactive approach to accident and hazard prevention.

Key Responsibilities

1. Risk Assessment and Management

  • Pre-Project Contractor Review: Before any project begins, review and ensure contractors meet all SHE compliance requirements.
  • Ongoing Compliance Monitoring: Supervise contractors on-site to maintain adherence to SHE requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Follow-up Audits and Reporting: Conduct necessary follow-up audits and compile statistics and reports to ensure ongoing SHE compliance.
  • Documentation and Control: Maintain an organized SHE document control system to streamline compliance tracking and reporting.
  • Claims Management: Administer Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) processes at the designated site to ensure timely and efficient claims handling.

2. Incident Investigation and Response Management

  • Accident Reporting and Documentation: Report and document all near-misses, minor and disabling injuries, fatalities, and any environmental incidents to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Emergency Preparedness Incident Reporting: Ensure all emergency preparedness incidents are logged, documented, and reported.
  • Root Cause Investigation: Conduct thorough investigations of accidents and incidents, submitting findings and recommendations to the SHE Superintendent.
  • Follow-up on Corrective Actions: Oversee the implementation of incident mitigation measures and conduct recall discussions with employees, ensuring lessons learned are shared across the workforce.

3. Compliance Management

  • Implementation and Monitoring: Oversee the adherence to SHE policies, standards, procedures, and systems across all levels of the workplace.
  • Legal Compliance and Audits: Coordinate and facilitate the appointment of SHE and emergency preparedness representatives to meet legal requirements.
  • Workplace Inspections: Perform regular workplace inspections, collaborating with site management to ensure safety protocols are effectively implemented.
  • Audit Participation: Conduct SHE Management System audits, both internally and externally, and monitor the implementation of action plans to address audit findings.

4. Stakeholder Relations

  • Healthcare Liaison: Maintain close communication with hospitals, doctors, and healthcare facilities to manage SHE-related medical cases, ensuring all billing and reporting issues are resolved.
  • Departmental Reporting: Prepare monthly reports for the SHE Superintendent, update HR on relevant safety statistics, and maintain open communication with regulatory bodies, including the Department of Labour.

5. Resource Management and Training

  • Safety Training and Induction: Conduct regular SHE inductions for new employees, contractors, and visitors, with refresher training sessions for current staff.
  • Training Program Development: Collaborate on the development of SHE training materials to ensure they reflect current best practices.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Coordinate and deliver SHE educational campaigns, encouraging a culture of safety and responsibility throughout the organization.
  • Toolbox Talks and Daily Safety Routines: Lead daily safety discussions and risk assessments with teams to reinforce a proactive approach to safety.
  • Emergency Preparedness Drills: Support periodic emergency preparedness exercises to test the site’s readiness and ensure all employees understand emergency protocols.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Educational Background:
    • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) certification.
    • Relevant national diploma in Safety Management or Environmental Management.
  • Specialized Certifications:
    • HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) Certificate.
    • SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course) Certificate or equivalent.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in SHE roles, particularly in safety auditing, HIRA, and incident investigation.
    • Familiarity with environmental management principles and emergency preparedness legislation.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Experience using electronic SHE management systems.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Valid Code 08 driver’s license.
    • Must be medically fit to meet the demands of the role.
