What You’ll Do
In this role, you’ll wear many hats, but your primary responsibilities will include:
- Risk Management:
- Conduct and coordinate risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
- Implement effective control measures to mitigate risks.
- Lead incident and accident investigations to determine root causes and prevent future occurrences.
- Contractor Management:
- Perform monthly contractor audits to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Assess and approve contractor files, providing guidance and support where needed.
- Compliance and Reporting:
- Collate and analyze monthly OHS statistics and environmental usage data for reporting purposes.
- Ensure adherence to ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the OHS Act and MHS Act to ensure full legal compliance.
- Site Safety Leadership:
- Manage legal appointments and oversee site establishment from a safety perspective.
- Conduct toolbox talks, inspections, and ensure SHE Committee meetings are held regularly.
- Take minutes during meetings, order safety equipment, and serve as an advisor to site management.
- Team Mentorship:
- Mentor and support SHE representatives, fostering a culture of safety and environmental awareness.
- Provide training and guidance on safety protocols and best practices.
What We’re Looking For
To excel in this role, you’ll need:
- A Matric certificate and a relevant qualification such as SAMTRAC or a similar OHS certification.
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Safety Officer, with at least 3 years in the construction or mining industry.
- Proven experience in maintaining ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
- A strong understanding of OHS and SHEQ legislation, as well as relevant labor laws.
- Expertise in risk assessment, incident investigation, and performance tracking.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- The ability to manage staff and work effectively with contractors and site teams.
