What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll wear many hats, but your primary responsibilities will include:

1. Risk Management:
   • Conduct and coordinate risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
   • Implement effective control measures to mitigate risks.
   • Lead incident and accident investigations to determine root causes and prevent future occurrences.
2. Contractor Management:
   • Perform monthly contractor audits to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
   • Assess and approve contractor files, providing guidance and support where needed.
3. Compliance and Reporting:
   • Collate and analyze monthly OHS statistics and environmental usage data for reporting purposes.
   • Ensure adherence to ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards.
   • Maintain a thorough understanding of the OHS Act and MHS Act to ensure full legal compliance.
4. Site Safety Leadership:
   • Manage legal appointments and oversee site establishment from a safety perspective.
   • Conduct toolbox talks, inspections, and ensure SHE Committee meetings are held regularly.
   • Take minutes during meetings, order safety equipment, and serve as an advisor to site management.
5. Team Mentorship:
   • Mentor and support SHE representatives, fostering a culture of safety and environmental awareness.
   • Provide training and guidance on safety protocols and best practices.

What We’re Looking For

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

• A Matric certificate and a relevant qualification such as SAMTRAC or a similar OHS certification.
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Safety Officer, with at least 3 years in the construction or mining industry.
• Proven experience in maintaining ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
• A strong understanding of OHS and SHEQ legislation, as well as relevant labor laws.
• Expertise in risk assessment, incident investigation, and performance tracking.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• The ability to manage staff and work effectively with contractors and site teams.
