About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Specialist Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) to join our team in Richards Bay. This is a permanent, full-time position where you will play a pivotal role in supporting the successful delivery of the Hillside HSER Strategy at a departmental level.
As an HSE Specialist, you will work closely with departmental line managers to ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements while driving continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance. Your expertise will help create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplace for all.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Develop and implement departmental HSER-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Audit and maintain all HSE documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Collaborate with leadership to align departmental activities with the overall Hillside HSER business plan.
- Conduct inspections, document findings, and ensure timely resolution of corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain departmental baseline risk registers to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Monitor compliance with controls, procedures, and applicable legislation.
- Analyze trends and provide actionable insights to line managers.
- Facilitate investigations into hazards and incidents, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
- Challenge and support line managers in addressing gaps in safety standards, reporting, and risk management.
- Conduct internal audits to verify the effective implementation of controls and compliance with legal requirements.
- Respond to emergencies and provide support during incidents.
- Promote proactive hazard reporting and participate in emergency drills.
- Implement safety interventions across a diverse workforce, including shift workers, contractors, and day staff.

About You
To excel in this role, you should have:
- Experience: A minimum of 4–6 years in safety management within a heavy industrial environment.
- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993) and ISO standards is advantageous.
- Skills: Experience with ICAM (Incident Cause Analysis Method) methodology is a plus.
- Qualifications: A Degree, B-Tech, or National Diploma in Health & Safety or Environment.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- A proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks.
