Our Cape Town team is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated SHE (Safety, Health, and Environmental) Intern to join us. What You’ll Be Doing:
As our SHE Intern, you’ll play a crucial role in supporting our SHE department. You’ll have the chance to work closely with seasoned professionals and gain hands-on experience in various aspects of safety, health, and environmental management.
SHE Internship Key Responsibilities:
- Learning and Supporting: You’ll shadow experienced mentors and assist them in their daily tasks. This will involve learning the ropes of compiling Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) and understanding the aspects and impacts of various activities.
- Compliance and Risk Management: You’ll help ensure that our operations comply with all relevant legal and environmental requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), air quality regulations, and waste management standards. You’ll also assist in developing measures to address and mitigate risks.
- Environmental Monitoring: Your role will involve helping with environmental monitoring tasks such as testing boreholes, measuring dust levels, and managing effluents. Your efforts will help us maintain our commitment to environmental stewardship.
- Audit and Inspection Support: You’ll assist in closing out findings from internal audits, inspections, and certification audits. This will include compiling monthly reports and managing safety files for contractors, ensuring they meet our safety standards.
- Sustainability Reporting: You’ll contribute to our monthly sustainability reports, which are essential for tracking our environmental impact and progress toward sustainability goals.
- Training and Development: Part of your role will involve collating, arranging, and reporting on training sessions in line with OSHACT requirements. You’ll also participate in audits, inspections, and emergency exercises to ensure our safety protocols are up to date.
- Incident Investigation: You’ll assist in investigating any incidents that occur on-site, helping to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Waste Management and Recycling: You’ll help manage our recycling center and waste disposal operations, ensuring we adhere to best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Surveillance Programs: You’ll assist in creating and managing effective surveillance programs to monitor noise levels, lighting (lux levels), and other environmental factors as required by the Act.
- Administrative Support: Your role will include handling all administrative tasks related to the SHE office, updating notice boards, and maintaining licenses, permits, and ISO certifications.
What We’re Looking For:
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent NQF 7 qualification in Safety Management, Environmental Science, or Environmental Management.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to tackle challenges with a proactive approach and come up with effective solutions.
- Time Management: Strong commitment to meeting deadlines and managing your time efficiently.
- Interpersonal Skills: Good communication skills, both oral and written, with an ability to work well with others.
- Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy in all aspects of your work.
- Technical Proficiency: Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office and a valid Code 08 Driver’s License.
