As a Handyman at Table Mountain National Park, you will play a vital role in maintaining the park’s infrastructure, including tourist buildings, staff accommodation, ablution facilities, and other essential equipment. This is a physically demanding role that requires technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure in outdoor conditions, including weekends and public holidays.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Handyman is to perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks across the park’s facilities and equipment. Key duties include:

  • Performing routine and preventative maintenance on buildings, infrastructure, and equipment, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical works, air conditioners, and refrigerators.
  • Conducting minor welding and civil works as required, ensuring all repairs meet quality and safety standards.
  • Maintaining and inspecting park utilities, such as electricity systems, borehole pumps, sewer systems, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Assisting with the inspection of work performed by external maintenance contractors to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Recording daily maintenance activities, identifying areas requiring attention, and reporting maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Transporting equipment, materials, and staff safely across the park, including performing vehicle inspections.
  • Supporting the planning, scheduling, and execution of technical maintenance tasks in coordination with the team.
  • Ordering stock and assisting with supply chain processes to ensure maintenance materials are readily available.
  • Performing basic housekeeping and ad-hoc tasks as identified by the supervisor.
  • Assisting with general administrative duties, including recording inventory, tools and equipment management, completing timesheets, log sheets, leave forms, and monthly reporting.

This role requires both practical technical expertise and organizational skills, ensuring that maintenance operations are efficient, safe, and effective across the park.

Required Qualifications

Candidates applying for the Handyman position must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: Grade 12 (Matric) / NCV Level 4 or equivalent
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years practical experience in a technical or maintenance field
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license is essential
  • Skills:
    • Basic general administration skills
    • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal (English)
    • Ability to work under pressure and in challenging outdoor conditions

Candidates will also be required to undergo a practical assessment to demonstrate their skills and competence in performing maintenance tasks.

Preferred Qualifications and Advantages

While not mandatory, the following qualifications and skills will enhance your application:

  • Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP)
  • Computer Literacy: Working knowledge of MS Office, including Word and Excel
  • Trade Certificates: Electrical, plumbing, carpentry, air conditioning, or refrigerator maintenance certificates
  • Experience in any of the above technical trades will be considered an added advantage.
