Necsa Job Vacancy As Safety Officer 2024

Necsa seeks a dedicated Safety Officer in Pretoria to uphold the OHS Act and ensure a compliant workplace, safeguarding health and safety across the organization.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Health and Safety Consultation: Act as a trusted advisor to line management and their teams, offering expert guidance on occupational health and safety matters. Help them navigate and implement the SHEQ system, particularly in the areas of Industrial Safety and Occupational Hygiene.
  • Monitoring Compliance: Assist management in ensuring that the organization complies with the SHEQ system by addressing issues related to industrial safety, occupational hygiene, and risk management.
  • Reporting Safety Concerns: Regularly report on safety matters, including safety inspections, risk assessments, and any safety-related incidents, to senior management and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Developing Safety Control Measures: Collaborate with management to design, implement, and monitor control measures that prevent safety hazards and reduce workplace risks.
  • Risk Assessments and Monitoring: Play an active role in approving and conducting risk assessments. You will oversee high-risk activities and take immediate action to stop unsafe practices or hazardous conditions.
  • Training and Safety Awareness: Facilitate and present training on safety protocols, emergency procedures, and the use of safety equipment. Ensure employees are fully equipped with the knowledge to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Contractor Safety Oversight: Evaluate contractors’ health and safety plans to ensure compliance with Necsa’s safety standards. You will also ensure that contractors adhere to safety requirements during project execution.
  • Audit Facilitation: Facilitate internal and external audits to assess compliance with health and safety standards. You will also maintain ISO management systems and assist in preparing for safety audits.
  • Incident Management and Reporting: Maintain an up-to-date record of all accidents and injuries, providing detailed reports and trend analysis. You will participate in incident investigations and help identify corrective measures.
  • Emergency Planning and Preparedness: Ensure that Necsa’s emergency plans for all buildings are current and effective. You will also organize emergency drills and ensure preparedness for all types of emergencies.

Job Requirements:

Key Knowledge & Skills:

  • Health and Safety Expertise: Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14000 standards, as well as experience in implementing and maintaining health and safety management systems.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: A thorough understanding of the OHS Act, Nuclear Energy Act, NNR regulations, and other relevant legislation governing workplace safety.
  • SHEQ-INS System: Familiarity with Necsa’s internal SHEQ-INS system and the ability to ensure that all safety practices align with company policies.
  • Risk Identification and Management: Strong skills in identifying health and safety risks and implementing controls to mitigate potential hazards.
  • Incident Investigation: Experience in conducting investigations into accidents and incidents to determine causes and suggest corrective actions.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to train, motivate, and influence employees to adopt safe working practices.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Knowledge and experience in planning and executing emergency preparedness programs and drills to ensure workplace readiness in case of an emergency.

Competencies:

  • Self-Motivated: Strong initiative and the ability to take ownership of tasks and goals, driving results independently.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to quickly understand and address complex safety issues and provide practical solutions.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualifications:
    • a similar health and safety credential, such as a National Diploma in Safety Management.
    • Professional registration (e.g., Construction Health and Safety Officer) will be an advantage.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in implementing SHEQ systems and overseeing safety in the workplace.
    • Additional safety management courses such as SAMTRAC or an Occupational Hygiene Certificate will be beneficial.
    • It is advantageous to be familiar with quality management software.
