Safcol: Artisan Development Programme –Apprenticeship 2025

Available Artisan Trades

The programme covers training in the following artisan trades:

  • Fitter & Turner: Develop essential skills in maintaining, repairing, and operating mechanical systems with precision and efficiency.
  • Millwright: Master the trade that combines mechanical and electrical skills, focusing on the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial equipment.
  • Electrical: Learn to install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems, gaining expertise in both residential and industrial settings.
  • Diesel Mechanic (Motor Trade): Specialize in the repair and maintenance of diesel engines, including vehicles and machinery in various industries.
  • Boiler Making: Acquire the skills needed to build, repair, and maintain boilers and other large vessels used in industries such as energy production and manufacturing.

What You Can Expect

During the three-year apprenticeship programme, learners will receive monthly stipends and ongoing mentorship as they gain real-world experience at Safcol’s Timbadola sawmill, located near Louis Trichardt (Makhado). This workplace-based training will be complemented by instruction at a recognized training centre, ensuring you develop both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills necessary to succeed.

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be fully prepared to take the final Trade Test, an essential requirement for becoming a certified artisan. This qualification opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities in industries that rely heavily on skilled tradespeople, including manufacturing, construction, energy, and automotive sectors.

Requirements to Apply

To be considered for the Artisan Development Programme – Apprenticeship 2025, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • South African citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of South Africa to be eligible.
  • Age range: The programme is open to unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Educational background: While completion of Grade 12 is recommended, it is not mandatory. However, applicants must have completed at least an N2 or Level 3 Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) certificate in the relevant trade theory.
  • Availability: Candidates must be committed to the full three-year programme, which includes both classroom instruction and practical work at the Timbadola sawmill.
