The Johannesburg Roads Agency invites applications for the positions of General Workers to be placed in its various depots in Region A – G. This is an opportunity to be part of the improvement and maintenance of vital road infrastructure in Johannesburg while gaining valuable work experience within the road construction, traffic management, and municipal services sectors.

About the Role

As a General Worker for the JRA, the ultimate expectation is an important contribution to ensuring the smooth and safe running of the roads within the City. Your job assignments will entail almost all tasks that might be necessary or appropriate for meeting road safety improvement and manual general labor support functions in differing depots within Traffic Signals, Traffic Markings, Resurfacing Depot, Fleet and Plant Depot, Motorways Depot, Asphalt, and Laboratory depots.

Key Responsibilities

Your role as a General Worker will involve physical labor, technical skills, and close attention to detail to ensure that all tasks are performed according to the highest standards. Some of the key responsibilities include:

  1. Traffic Management and Road Safety:
    • You will be responsible for directing traffic safely around hazards or work sites on the road. This will include setting up temporary road signs, traffic cones, and barricades in line with standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.
  2. Concrete Work and Road Construction:
    • You will assist with the construction and repair of concrete kerbing, which forms the edge between the roadway and the pavement. Additionally, you may be required to work on stormwater kerb inlets (KIs) to ensure proper drainage.
    • Concrete slabs will need to be pulled with the assistance of crane operators when necessary.
  3. General Road Maintenance:
    • Part of your duties will involve performing manual labor tasks like digging ditches, cleaning and installing culverts, and removing debris from roadways. These activities will help improve road quality and ensure smooth traffic flow.
    • You will also be required to assist in repairing potholes and cracked pavement, patching roads, resurfacing areas that have become worn out, and repairing footways or speed humps.
  4. Stormwater and Drainage Systems:
    • You will assist in the installation of stormwater pipes and participate in the building and repair of road manholes to maintain proper drainage and prevent flooding in certain areas.
  5. Vegetation Control:
    • As part of maintaining the integrity of the roads, you will be involved in trimming trees, shrubs, and other vegetation along the road. This includes tasks like mowing, cutting, stacking, chipping, and hauling away debris to ensure that roads remain clear and safe.
    • You will also apply sand and gravel to roads where necessary and spread paving materials, ensuring smooth and even surfaces.
  6. Excavation and Material Handling:
    • The role will require you to load and move materials, excavate dirt, dig trenches, install culvert pipes, backfill trenches, and widen roads to improve road capacity.
    • You will also assist in spreading rock chips, road sealing, and cutting road grades to ensure that the surface is durable and well-maintained.
  7. General Manual Labour:
    • Beyond specific tasks, you will be expected to perform general manual labor as required. This may include removing debris, repairing cracked roads, maintaining drainage channels, and contributing to general roadworks where needed.

Requirements for the Role

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: A minimum of Grade 10 or equivalent NQF qualification.
  • Work Experience: At least six (6) months’ experience in handling road construction, maintenance, and/or building machinery and equipment.
  • Physical Fitness: The role requires the ability to perform manual labor and handle the physical demands of the tasks at hand.
  • Attention to Detail: You should be detail-oriented to ensure all tasks are completed according to standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.
