Key Responsibilities
Shift Preparation and Duties
- Reporting to the designated workplace and receiving task allocations for your shift.
- Identifying the locomotive for preparation and placing the required equipment.
- Cleaning and organizing the workspace.
- Assisting in starting locomotives and conducting brake tests.
- Signing on duty and dispatching the locomotive as instructed.
Locomotive Preparation
- Preparing locomotives by gathering, inspecting, and supplementing necessary equipment.
- Cleaning the locomotive area and assisting in start-up and brake tests.
Communication Equipment
- Collecting and testing radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, or telemeters to ensure functionality before use.
Train Preparation and Safety Checks
- Mounting and detaching telemeters, completing vehicle lists, and performing brake tests in collaboration with the Train Driver.
- Ensuring the proper attachment or detachment of vehicles and updating necessary documentation.
Shunting Activities
- Conducting shunting operations at sidings and en route, including placing and removing trucks per the work order.
- Clearing and updating vehicle lists for accurate records.
En Route Support
- Monitoring train operations to ensure safe and uninterrupted travel.
- Communicating signal positions and other vital information with the Train Driver.
- Protecting the train during incidents and assisting with emergencies.
Administrative and Safety Duties
- Completing train journals and submitting them for timely salary processing.
- Adhering to safety protocols, reporting deviations, and performing administrative tasks as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
Educational Requirements
- A certificate in pure mathematics and/or physical science from grade 12.
Additional Requirements
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old as per railway safety standards.
- Medical examinations are used to confirm mental and physical wellness.
- Psychomotor skills, assessed through the Vienna Testing System.
- Minimum height requirement: 1.6m.
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety risk assessments annually.
