Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Firefighter, you will play a vital role in emergency response operations, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and property preservation. Under minimal supervision, you will respond to emergencies following established protocols and legislation, including the Fire Brigade Services Act. Your duties will include:
- Managing fire outbreaks, rescue missions, and controlling hazardous situations.
- Ensuring the safe and effective use of firefighting vehicles and equipment during emergencies.
- Training and mentoring junior firefighters to enhance their skills and ensure team readiness.
- Maintaining accurate records and ensuring communication flows efficiently during and after operations.
- Being prepared and equipped for immediate response to emergency calls.
Requirements:
- A Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Code C1 Driver’s License.
- Relevant firefighting qualifications, including:
- Firefighter I and II (IFSAC Accredited).
- Pump Operator / Aerial Appliance certification.
- Higher Certificate in Fire Technology.
- Fire Service Instructor I (IFSAC Accredited).
- Fire Investigation and Fire Prevention certification.
- High Angle Rescue I.
- First Aid Level 3 certification.
- Hazmat Awareness and Hazmat Operational/Fire & Rescue (IFSAC Accredited).
- At least 4 years of operational firefighting experience, with a minimum of 2 years at the Firefighter II level.
- Physically and mentally fit, able to pass the Medical Test NFPA 1582.
- No criminal record.
Desirable Skills and Traits:
- Ability to perform intense physical tasks under extreme conditions.
- Strong communication skills, especially when working in emergency situations.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to make swift decisions under pressure.
- Strong leadership and team-oriented mindset.
- Competence in using and demonstrating firefighting equipment and techniques to subordinates.
Special Conditions:
- This position requires flexibility in working hours, including shift work, public holidays, and emergency call-outs.
- Candidates should be able to communicate fluently in at least two of the official languages of the Western Cape.
- Successful candidates must be prepared to undergo a psychological evaluation and all relevant medical tests.
