Position Overview:

At our company, safety and quality are at the heart of everything we do. We are seeking a passionate and skilled SHEQ Coordinator to join our team in Gauteng. Your role will be critical in overseeing all aspects of Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) management within our business unit (BU). You will ensure that all safety procedures, policies, and targets are adhered to, while fostering a safe working environment where risks are identified and managed effectively.

Purpose of the Role:

Your main responsibility as a SHEQ Coordinator will be to ensure that our operations comply with internal and external environmental standards, as well as legal and safety regulations. You’ll work closely with the Business Unit Manager to set SHEQ objectives and goals, ensure that all employees understand these standards, and help create a workplace where health and safety are top priorities. Your efforts will enable us to perform at our best while minimizing risk and maintaining compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Policy, Targets, Objectives & Goals:
    • Ensure that all company policies are visible in operational areas and that employees are familiar with these policies.
    • Collaborate with the BU manager to establish annual SHEQ targets and objectives, ensuring compliance with corporate goals.
    • Communicate SHEQ policies and objectives clearly to all employees and clients, both internally and externally.
    • Continuously reinforce the importance of meeting SHEQ objectives to ensure that everyone is aligned with company safety standards.
  2. Legal Compliance:
    • Ensure that all company practices meet the necessary legal and regulatory requirements, especially in risk management.
    • Stay updated on legislative changes relevant to safety and risk and ensure compliance with new regulations.
    • Ensure that all statutory documents are correctly submitted and maintained.
    • Make sure all employees are aware of the latest safety legislation and legal requirements, keeping the team well-informed.
    • Facilitate the legal appointments within your area of responsibility, and advise management on roles and responsibilities regarding safety.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with regulatory bodies such as the Department of Labour and the Department of Mineral Resources.
  3. Training & Development:
    • Support the organization’s training efforts by ensuring all employees receive adequate training in safety, health, and environmental compliance.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of training initiatives to improve the company’s risk management processes.
    • Ensure that employees have the skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties safely and in compliance with all SHEQ regulations.
  4. Special Projects:
    • Lead special projects related to SHEQ initiatives by creating detailed project plans.
    • Provide regular updates to management on the progress and outcomes of these projects.
    • Conduct reviews to identify opportunities for improvement, ensuring continuous enhancement of SHEQ systems.
  5. Risk Assessment & Management:
    • Ensure that comprehensive risk assessments are conducted, and action plans are developed and maintained.
    • Offer guidance on risk management processes and assist in implementing preventive measures.
    • Conduct regular risk awareness sessions to ensure all employees understand potential hazards and how to manage them.
  6. Monitoring & Evaluation:
    • Regularly audit risk management processes to ensure compliance with company and legal standards.
    • Monitor employees’ medical status and manage health exposure levels, ensuring they remain within acceptable limits.
    • Track environmental and quality control compliance, implementing corrective actions when needed.
    • Create risk awareness by utilizing appropriate communication channels such as workshops, training, and media.
  7. Reporting & Documentation:
    • Submit comprehensive monthly reports on SHEQ activities, ensuring management stays informed of any developments or incidents.
    • Ensure that all incidents are reported in line with company procedures, and compile statistics to track progress and address trends.
    • Provide regular updates on Workers’ Compensation Assistance (WCA) status and other relevant risk metrics.

Qualifications:

  • National Diploma in Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality Management.
  • A Degree in SHEQ Management is advantageous but not required.
  • Certifications such as SAMTRAC, COMSOC 1 and 2, and experience in ISO 45001:2018 Implementation are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a SHEQ Coordinator role.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and the Mine Health and Safety Act is essential.

To excel as a SHEQ Coordinator, you should possess the following skills:

  • People management: You will need to manage and lead teams, ensuring everyone understands and complies with SHEQ standards.
  • Communication: Both verbal and written communication skills are crucial for delivering important safety messages and training.
  • Problem-solving: You should be able to identify safety risks and implement solutions to mitigate them.
  • Teamwork & Negotiation: Working closely with other departments, clients, and regulatory bodies will be a key part of this role.
