Your Mission
As a SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) Officer, your primary responsibility will be to ensure compliance with SHEQ regulations and standards at Epiroc South Africa. You will play a vital role in coordinating and implementing operational requirements across contracts, aligning with both Epiroc’s legal framework and customer needs. Your insights and proactive initiatives will help elevate customer satisfaction while exceeding legal compliance requirements.
Main Responsibilities
In this pivotal role, you will:
- Develop and Maintain Management Systems: Lead the coordination and implementation of an Integrated Management System (IMS) that meets the standards of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 for Epiroc South Africa and our customers.
- Drive SHEQ Initiatives: Be the cornerstone of the SHEQ system at our PSD Service Centre in Kathu. This includes overseeing ISO implementation, maintaining safety protocols, and supporting the Local Distribution Centre (LDC) as necessary.
- Ensure Safety Compliance: Manage customer safety files, including legal compliance, risk assessments, training rollouts, and continuous improvement initiatives. Your goal will be to uphold Epiroc’s commitment to safety and health.
- Conduct Risk Assessments: Collaborate with the Mine and Epiroc Site Manager to conduct SHEQ risk assessments and recommend improvements based on findings. Your insights will be essential in achieving our target of zero accidents and incidents.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records related to SHEQ statistics, participate in incident investigations, and report findings during meetings to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Implement Training Programs: Assess SHEQ training needs and ensure that all site employees comply with statutory requirements, fostering a culture of safety awareness and good practices.
- Lead Audits: Serve as the primary Audit Lead, conducting GAP analyses to ensure compliance with legal and Epiroc Group requirements. This includes preparation for Department of Labour inspections and other regulatory assessments.
- Support Continuous Improvement: Assist in the rollout of Epiroc’s SHEQ strategy and drive initiatives focused on preventing injuries, promoting employee well-being, and minimizing environmental impacts.
- Travel as Needed: This position will primarily be based in Kathu, but regular travel to other provinces will be required to support compliance and safety initiatives across South Africa.
Qualifications and Skills
- A degree or National Diploma in a relevant SHEQ discipline.
- At least five years of experience in a mining or engineering environment.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 implementation and auditing.
- Technical aptitude and understanding of mining practices and product applications.
- Proficiency in risk assessment techniques (SWIFT, HAZOP, FMECA, WRAC, HIRA).
- Familiarity with the MHSA Act and operational legislation.
- A legitimate Code B driver’s license and a readiness to travel frequently.
