Job Overview

The Cleaner will be responsible for ensuring that all interior and exterior areas of the facility are kept in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition in line with health regulations and departmental standards. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

Successful candidate appointed as a Cleaner at the Department of Health in Ekurhuleni will be expected to perform a wide range of cleaning and support duties, including but not limited to the following:

  • Cleaning all interior and exterior areas of the facility, including offices, consulting rooms, passages, waiting areas, bathrooms, showers, and toilets.
  • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, and polishing floors according to required hygiene standards.
  • Conducting high-level dusting of walls, ceilings, fixtures, and surfaces.
  • Washing windows, staircases, lifts, fire escapes, cupboards, and other assigned areas.
  • Cleaning and maintaining kitchen and staff-use equipment such as microwaves, refrigerators, and cupboards.
  • Cleaning medical equipment surfaces and dustbins as per infection prevention and control guidelines.
  • Assisting with laundry duties when required.
  • Cleaning and managing all spillages promptly and safely to prevent injuries and contamination.
  • Assisting with decontamination and disinfection of areas and surfaces as required in healthcare environments.
  • Removing general and medical waste in strict compliance with Health Care Waste Management and Infection Prevention and Control policies.
  • Serving meals and washing utensils when required.
  • Ensuring all cleaning tasks are completed in a manner that prevents injuries and promotes workplace safety.
  • Performing any other reasonable duties delegated by the supervisor in line with operational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • AET Level 4 (Standard 7 or Grade 9 report) or Grade 12 qualification.
  • A minimum of six (6) months’ appropriate cleaning experience, preferably within an institutional or structured work environment.
  • Ability to cope with the physical demands of cleaning work.
  • Proven ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Honesty, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Willingness to rotate duties when required.
  • Initiative and basic problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

While not mandatory, the following attributes will be considered advantageous:

  • Previous experience in a healthcare, hospital, or clinic environment.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Familiarity with handling medical waste and cleaning equipment safely.
