Educational and Professional Requirements:
- Minimum Education: National Diploma or advanced three-year degree in Safety/Occupational Health and Safety. Additional qualifications in Environmental Management are highly desirable.
- Experience: At least 3-5 years in a relevant OHS role.
- Knowledge Base: Thorough understanding of pertinent regulations, including OHS Act, SANS regulations, Water and Pollution Act, and Environmental Act.
- Skills: Advanced proficiency in Excel along with excellent relationship-building, listening, and interpersonal skills.
What You Will Do As Occupational Health and Safety Officer:
As an OHS Officer at the Boxer Group, you will be instrumental in shaping and directing our safety protocols and procedures. Here’s what your typical responsibilities will entail:
Development and Strategic Implementation:
- Formulate and enforce new risk policies and procedures tailored to our unique operational needs, ensuring they align with national safety standards and promote a secure work environment.
External Relationship Management:
- Foster and maintain strategic relationships with key external entities including the Department of Labour, Fire Department, and Health Department. You will engage with these bodies to procure essential OHS reports and facilitate collaborative efforts towards improved workplace safety.
Risk Identification and Evaluation:
- Conduct thorough risk assessments by identifying potential hazards within the scope of relevant building regulations, insurance requirements, and national standards. Regularly update your findings and adapt strategies in response to evolving risks and regulations.
- Perform detailed site inspections, maintain checklists, and document evidence meticulously. Occasional incident investigations will also require your adept analytical skills.
Compliance and Risk Management:
- Diligently maintain and update a comprehensive risk register, documenting all findings and noted risks, followed by prompt strategizing on mitigation measures.
- Certify that contractors engage with the company only after achieving vetted compliance standards, including securing a letter of good standing.
- Prepare insightful risk reports and maintain effective communication with both internal and external departments. Your role will include making recommendations based on your findings, obtaining management feedback, and ensuring the follow-through of agreed-upon actions.
Teamwork, Training, and Organizational Alignment:
- Take an active role in mentoring new entrants to the OHS field within the organization and provide them with necessary hands-on training.
- Manage your own workflow with foresight and efficiency, anticipate potential obstacles, and prioritize tasks to meet critical deadlines.
- Engage constructively with team members, share vital information freely, and foster a cooperative environment that aligns with the group’s overarching values.
