Key Responsibilities

As an Apprentice Fitter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our manufacturing plant. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Assisting in Fitting and Fabrication:
    • Work alongside experienced fitters to assemble, fabricate, and fit various plant equipment.
    • Engage in the repair and servicing of machinery, ensuring they operate efficiently and reliably.
  2. Industrial Pipework Installation and Maintenance:
    • Install industrial pipework and carry out necessary repairs using welding methods.
    • Ensure all jobs are completed on time while maintaining high safety standards.
  3. Electrical Equipment Maintenance:
    • Support the maintenance team in testing malfunctioning electrical equipment.
    • Identify defects, troubleshoot issues, and replace defective parts to restore equipment functionality.
  4. Chemical Processing Equipment Installation:
    • Assist in the installation of chemical processing equipment such as pumps, pipes, mechanical structures, and agitators.
    • Ensure all installations are performed accurately and safely.
  5. Preventative Maintenance:
    • Participate in planning and executing preventative maintenance tasks to minimize equipment downtime.
    • Help develop and implement maintenance schedules.
  6. General Housekeeping:
    • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in the workshop.
    • Ensure all tools and equipment are stored properly and ready for use.
  7. Pipe Fitting and Troubleshooting:
    • Assist in fitting and troubleshooting pipework issues.
    • Propose improvement concepts when necessary to enhance operational efficiency.
  8. Safety Compliance:
    • Adhere to all relevant Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) regulations as per company policy.
    • Report any incidents, near misses, or safety hazards accurately and honestly.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Background:
    • Minimum education of Grade 12, supplemented by a post-matric qualification in Mechanical Fitting.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Awareness of Merseta apprenticeship requirements is essential.
    • Basic knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSAct) to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Proficiency in basic computer applications is required to support reporting and documentation tasks.
  • Report Writing:
    • Strong report writing skills to document maintenance activities and safety incidents effectively.
  • Teamwork and Independence:
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Being deadline-driven is crucial to meet project timelines and maintenance schedules.
