Purpose of the SHE Occupational Safety Officer Role

The primary purpose of this role is to coordinate and drive all health and safety activities within the Secunda operations, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations and Sasol’s internal standards. You will be responsible for identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, managing incident investigations, and implementing preventative measures to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, contractors, and stakeholders.

As a SHE Occupational Safety Officer at Sasol, you will play a crucial role in embedding a strong safety culture within operational teams and ensuring that safety considerations are seamlessly integrated into all business processes.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be accountable for a wide range of SHE responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Hazard Identification & Risk Management

  • Conduct comprehensive workplace hazard assessments to proactively identify potential risks.
  • Facilitate safety-related risk assessments and ensure corrective measures are implemented.
  • Lead root cause analyses (RCAs) for workplace incidents, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Participate in risk assessment processes to guarantee that all safety concerns are addressed.

Safety Audits & Compliance

  • Conduct regular audits, including logbook audits, lock-out audits, and insurance engineers audits, to verify compliance with safety standards.
  • Monitor compliance with Sasol SHE requirements during shutdown planning, campaigns, and service provider audits.
  • Provide input for the development and continuous improvement of safety policies, standards, and procedures.

Safety Improvement & Reporting

  • Contribute to the rollout of Sasol’s Safety Improvement Plan and report on progress to management.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend opportunities to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure that safety initiatives align with corporate objectives and legal requirements.

Training & Coaching

  • Mentor and coach team members on safety practices, ensuring personal and team development.
  • Facilitate training sessions on the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety protocols.
  • Support the integration of SHE principles into daily business plans and operational procedures.

Operational & Strategic Contribution

  • Ensure that all safety objectives are met within designated timelines and quality standards.
  • Manage ad-hoc requests and safety-related tasks as required by management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate safety practices into operational processes.

Education & Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following educational and professional requirements:

  • English, math, and physical science in grade 12.
  • SAMTRAC Certificate in Safety Management.
  • National Diploma or B.Tech in Safety Management.

Experience & Licenses

  • Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience in occupational health and safety.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with teams and integrate SHE into business plans.
  • Safety Expertise: Deep understanding of safety management techniques and principles.
